Spine Specialist, Dr. Philip A. Meinhardt Joins Sforzo | Dillingham | Stewart Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Practice

SARASOTA – Philip A. Meinhardt, M.D., a board certified, fellowship-trained spine specialist, has joined Sforzo | Dillingham | Stewart – Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Sarasota.

“Dr. Meinhardt brings extensive training and experience in spine surgery to our growing orthopedic and sports medicine practice,” said Christopher Sforzo, M.D., founder.  “He shares our commitment to leading-edge personalized care as well as giving back to our community.  It’s a pleasure to welcome him and his family to Sarasota.”

As a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Meinhardt uses both surgical and non-surgical protocols to treat degenerative conditions in the cervical (upper) and lumbar (lower) spine, as well as thoracic spinal issues.  “My practice ranges from minimally invasive procedures to larger, more complex surgeries, including treatment of traumatic injuries,” said Dr. Meinhardt. “Every procedure is personalized based on the patient’s individual problem.”

Prior to joining the Sarasota practice, Dr. Meinhardt spent eight years as an orthopedic surgeon at Jewett Orthopedic Clinic in Winter Park.  While in Orlando, he was an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, where he received the “Excellence in Teaching Award” in 2014 and 2015.

Dr. Meinhardt is a co-author of “Cervical Spine: Plain Radiology,” a 2012 article in the journal Cervical Spine. He also presented a poster on “Complications in Unfused Scoliosis Surgery” at the 2008 International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques.

Dr. Meinhardt earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and his medical degree at the University of South Florida.  He completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in orthopedic surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in spine surgery at OrthoCarolina Spine in Charlotte, North Carolina.

For more than a decade, Dr. Meinhardt has taken part in volunteer medical missions to Ethiopia, Haiti and Iraq.  In 2017, he traveled to Kurdistan in Northern Iraq providing care to patients, and training spine surgeons at Erbil Community Hospital.

“When I was a resident, I worked with an orthopedic surgeon who had done volunteer work in Ethiopia,” Dr. Meinhardt said. “Ever since then, I’ve been active in medical missions. Along with the sense of fulfillment, these trips have broadened my medical experience, treating conditions like tuberculosis infections of the spine that we don’t see in the United States.”

Dr. Meinhardt and his wife Angie, a former nurse practitioner, have three children, Aubrey, Gabriela and Aaron. “We enjoy the Sarasota lifestyle, and like to be outdoors and on the water,” he said.
