About Charles E. Stewart, M.D.
Charles E. Stewart M.D. is a board-certified, Johns Hopkins fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult complex reconstruction of the lower extremity. His specialties include lower extremity sports injuries, meniscal injuries, ACL reconstruction, partial knee replacement, total hip and knee arthroplasty (replacement), as well as, the reconstruction of failed hip and knee arthroplasties, and complete fracture care. Dr. Stewart’s focus is on performing complex reconstruction using state-of-the-art procedures to maximize short and long-term function. In addition to traditional total hip replacement (arthroplasty), he has the training and expertise to perform the technically demanding anterior approach for primary total hip replacement. This sought-after anterior approach is only performed by specially trained surgeons providing their patients the benefit of reduced post-operative pain, swifter recovery, and shorter hospital stays.
Dr. Stewart has medical appointments and admitting privileges at many local medical facilities, including Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, IMG (Intercoastal Medical Group) Ambulatory Surgical Center, Advanced Surgery Center, and Doctor’s SameDay Surgical Center.
Having grown up in Florida, he chose to pursue most of his education in the Sunshine State. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, graduating Summa Cum Laude, from Rollins College, in Winter Park, FL. Dr. Stewart completed his medical degree from The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
His love of orthopedics and a desire to help inspired him to lead a medical team with Project Medishare to catalog the orthopedic needs of the Haitian people. Dr. Stewart also participated in Operation Walk in India, where his team completed 70 total joint surgeries in three days on patients who typically had no access to this life-changing surgery. This commitment to care for others was encouraged by his father, an orthopedic surgeon, and his grandfather, a general surgeon.
Dr. Stewart did his internship and residency in general orthopedics and trauma care at the Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando FL. Considered one of the best and busiest trauma centers in the United States, ORMC exposes its physicians to the highest level of trauma and reconstruction. He completed his orthopedic fellowship in adult reconstruction at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
As a fourth-generation Floridian, Dr. Stewart has an affinity for all things Florida. He enjoys all types of water sports including boating, stand-up paddleboarding, and surfing, and is an avid fisherman. He and his wife Tatyana have a very active son, Byron. As a family, they are involved in many Sarasota volunteer projects and community outreach programs.
